Moment in Time
Hana
When a dream is shared it often becomes a reality. Such is the case with Hana. It all began with the rhythms of the ocean; natural, flowing, timeless. Those rhythms brought us together riding waves when we were just teenagers. They have stayed with us through life, in surfing and music.
When our contemporary surfing lifestyles began to fade into the sunset in the early 1970's the three of us formed a band. We named our dream 'Hana' after one of the most beautiful spots on earth. This was our way of keeping our love of Hawaii and its spirit of Aloha with us wherever we traveled.
We set out on an uncharted course playing original music to the rhythms of our ocean hearts. Our journey led us to the beach towns of California and then on to the ski slopes of Colorado. We had a great time and stayed true to our mission of playing Hana music, but as will happen, life got in the way. Children were born and the realities of parenthood set us off in different directions, but not in spirit, and not as friends. The bonds of the ocean kept us together in the dream that we would someday come back together and feel those rhythms again.
We feel very fortunate that after starting this journey some thirty years ago, we found the inspiration, time, and blessings to record these songs. Hana lives on in this album, our dream has become a reality, and for this we are forever thankful.
Hana is a collaboration of three different musical backgrounds; folk, blues, and classical. These styles remain as the foundation to our sound. As time went on we incorporated some soft jazz and R&B grooves into our music. Combining all of our musical influences and being open to each others ideas and suggestions is what gives this album a unique homegrown drift.
In the beginning as it is today, it has never been about making "it." We have stayed close because of our special friendship, and the total enjoyment we get from playing Hana music. Live Aloha, Dave Rullo, Jon Close, Herb Torrens.
